How does the Donut site make money?

Atom Content Marketing, which owns the Donut website, makes its living by providing business content to banks, law firms, universities, local councils, chambers of commerce, and other organisations. These, in turn, make the content available to their customers, their clients, their students and their members.

In the past, the Donut website was purely a showcase for our content. People heard about us because of the popularity of the Donut website. But once traffic on the Donut site climbed to over one million page impressions a month, in January 2015, we decided to run the website on a commercial basis. So we started building a new, mobile-friendly web platform for it and we began allowing advertisements on the site.

Advertising in its various forms remains a small fraction of our revenues. We clearly label any content that has been specifically sponsored, and any advertorial. But on the whole all of our content is written by our own team and our priority is to cover the 'need-to-know' topics and questions that business people are interested in.

What is the idea behind the Donut site?

To help small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to become more successful by giving them access to free, reliable, independent advice about a range of key business tasks and issues, as well as money-saving opportunities through the website's sponsors.

What areas of advice does the Donut site cover?

There are currently six sections - Sectors Donut (covering over 200 types of business) Marketing Donut, Start Up Donut, Law Donut (covering both business and personal law), Tech Donut (covering business technology) and Money Donut. The first, Marketing Donut, was launched in April 2009. The first, Marketing Donut, was launched in April 2009. Three months later we launched Start Up Donut. The Law Donut was launched in August 2009, then IT Donut (now Tech Donut) in August 2010 and the Tax Donut (now Money Donut) followed another 12 months later. Each site took about one year to plan, write and build and have been further expanded over the years. Sectors Donut was launched in April 2016, with our publishing partner Parkes. We plan to add more sections in the future.

Why 'Donut'?

Good question. At Atom often we draw 'donut diagrams' to map out projects. We considered more than 60 other names, but Donut was the one we all liked, so it stuck. Read Donut founder Rory MccGwire's blog for the story behind the name.
