Here are five proven tips to help you create a better small stand:
- Use lighting. According to some industry research, lighting can increase awareness of your stand by 30 percent to 50 percent. Supplement your light package that comes with shell-scheme stands if needs be to ensure graphics and product is seen in the best light!
- Take a novel approach. Develop a theme for your stand. Leave the traditional approach to the big exhibitors that can rely on the size of their space to stand out.
- Display the product or company name most recognised by attendees.
- 'Size' everything to fit the stand. (Unless you're purposely using large-scale props as a draw.) You wouldn't put a king-sized bed in your 3 x 4m guest bedroom. Large information counters (borrowed from a larger stand) can dwarf your staff.
- Invest in a modular system that's easy to customise. Avoid garden furniture and tressle tables with tablecloths; they can look cheap. A manufactured system gives the exhibit a more "finished" look.

Some good stuff here.
Modular is always a good route, best of both worlds, customisable yet not as expensive as a completely traditional/custom exhibition stand, and modular stands can still look fantastic. Having exhibition stand contractors take a novel approach is another good thing to consider, you need to stand out from the crowd, you need to entice and intrigue passers by.
