Forum - Marketing the Donut

Marketing the Donut

I guess its an obvious question to ask...what methods have been used to market 'The Marketing Donut'?
After a busy initial couple of days there doesn't seem to be too much activity on the forum although this may not necessarily be a reflection of number of registrations.
I gained awareness of the site purely by chance through copy I received from a client for a newsletter I was designing. How did others hear about it?
What keywords are being used towards natural search engine listings? Is there a business listing for an 'email shot' that has been used - if so it would be interesting to see what the response was.
Appreciate its early days but it may assist other online startups or those looking at developing an online marketing strategy to see what steps have been taken for this site and what methods are proving successful and whats not.
Your thoughts?
Ian

Hi Ian,
Sorry for the length delay in response but it's difficult to follow every thread on here! Social media is a key tool for the Marketing Donut but it is early days and a community takes time to evolve and nurture. MD ran a successful twitter conference a few months back using a marketing donut hashtag. This got people talking about MD and sharing information/links - not only did it raise awareness through RT activity and new visits to website, it also generated a lot of new followers for many of the MD faithful (me included). It was well thought out and well delivered.
A good person to follow on Twitter to ask questions about MD is @MickDickinson, part of the editorial team.
If you ever want some tips/pointers on site launch marketing feel free to drop me a line - i've put launch plans in place for many retailers and follow a standard structure than can be adapted to any brand. You can get me on Twitter @einbusiness_JG or check my profile on MD @ http://www.marketingdonut.co.uk/experts/james-gurd
thanks
james

I've just discovered it and I intend to hang around the forum and check in frequently.
Not only to help others but also to promote myself too :-)

I've just located it and registered through the 'SMART' royal mail magazine - it was mentioned in an article.

Hi Ian - interesting... I'm going to have a chat with our marketing guys to see what they say. But as far as I'm aware we've largely used an online strategy involving SEO, social networking and link exchanges with our experts. We've also been promoting via marketing based news stories on newswires - and we've been promoting offline, of course, through our own networks. And I'm trying to refresh the homepage content regularly.

Of course, we're still ironing out some bugs (invevitable on such a complex build), too. And we're building our e-newsletter at the moment, which will function as another way to flag up new content and bring people to the site.

I take your point about the initial furry on the forums and then the apparent dying off. I can see from our stats that people are visiting the forums, but they're not dipping in as much as we'd like. I think we need to get our experts more involved... Perhaps you have some thoughts?

I believe the interaction/availability of help via a forum is a valuable part of the site but I am also aware, having been asked to add forums to several clients websites, that it takes hard work and quite a large volume of active users to generate interest and become 'self sufficient'. I hope it grows, I think the newsletter will help, particularly if it has a section to encourage forwarding by existing members into their networks.

I look forward to receiving it.

Ian
